DISH Network and Amazon are a great pairing already, and there is a good chance in the near future that the two will be much more intertwined. As you may have heard, Dish recently became the first television provider to connect their hardware with Amazon Alexa, allowing subscribers to utilize Amazon’s personal assistant for hands-free voice control of all Dish devices as well as the functions it already included—such as making calls, playing music or looking up the weather.
Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Dish’s partnership with Amazon could greatly expand and potentially even result in a joint 5G wireless network. Dish has been working on this for a while, but a partnership with Amazon would allow them to reach many more subscribers. It’s a win-win for both parties, as Amazon could then offer cellular service to members in addition to streaming Prime Video over Dish airwaves.
Dish would be an ideal partner for Amazon, as the company has been seeking a company to join with in order to expand offerings outside of satellite television and internet. Amazon has been finding incredible success in a variety of industries, but has yet to enter Dish’s current realm of television services or its future area of business as a cellular provider.
Dish would benefit from digital distribution in addition to its satellite network. The company also been putting money into acquiring wireless spectrum, but has yet to come forward with plans for it. Because creating a wireless network costs a ton, finding a partner to help fund it is a prude move for Dish. Dish doesn’t really offer pre-existing wireless companies something that they don’t already have in spades, but Amazon isn’t yet involved in this type of venture. Factor in Amazon’s wealth of content on Prime and you are looking at a perfect partnership from both sides.
Dish benefits from Amazon’s ability to heavily invest in infrastructure, while Amazon benefits from Dish’s 5g spectrum and the ability to offer subscribers a brand new cell phone service. Once you add in Amazon’s Prime and cloud computing services you can easily see why the former bookseller would love to expand its reach by joining up with Dish.
It’ll be interesting to monitor this situation over the coming months, but one thing is clear: something big is in the pipeline for these companies. Whether it is a bold joint venture to bring a brand new wireless 5g-telecomm services to the United States remains to be seen, but anything could happen. It’s worth keeping your ear to the ground, as the Dish-Amazon TV/Internet/Cellular service giant could disrupt multiple industries.
